Interview: Jerrell Gibbs
“Baltimore artist, Jerrell Gibbs, brings photos of friends and family to life through his expressive and colourful paintings of them. Using the figures in his life as a platform to create dialogue around human connection, the African-American diaspora, and ideas of love and understanding, Gibbs’ paintings invite you into a world of representation and interpretation. Graduating with a Master of Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, MD in 2020, Gibbs already has one solo show under his belt and another forthcoming in Paris in September 2022. Gibbs’ work is concerned with capturing the beauty in the everyday and the portrayal of truth. And whilst the suggestive and decoratively detailed elements in his paintings draw you in to the artist’s world, one can’t help but to begin searching for the deeper narrative within the work – his artworks create a window in which to explore life’s experiences through brushstroke, empathy and abstraction.”
