Article: The Crisis of Masculinity
“Today, we are closer to equality than we have ever been. Yet “boys will be boys” is still something commonly, and worryingly, heard in conversations with friends, at work, and in passing conversations. When asked, the majority of men will probably say they believe in gender equality, but being an ally also means actively working to achieve it. So why aren’t more men turning up as allies? Amongst the equal opportunistic mindset of younger generations, there is currently a burgeoning underbelly of rage ‘incels’ and online ‘manospheres’ that are driving younger teens towards misogyny when they’re at an influential age. One only has to look at the popularity of TikTok influencers like Andrew Tate, with 11.6 billion video views, he spreads messages – under the pretence of male self-improvement – of racism, homophobia and above all misogyny. In a society where patriarchy still prevails, what needs to change for equality to become a reality? How can we achieve a concept of masculinity that also aligns with equality and freedom for all? The article will look at the rise of radicalisation and men’s rights activists whilst also questioning: Do boys really still want to be boys? Or as masculinity faces its biggest crisis to date, will more men become allies for the fight for equality?”
